Overview map | |
Above the Burn of Cairnie lies a small, almost square, tower which formed the seat of the eldest sons of the Gordons of Avochie. Over the entrance is the inscription “From Ovr Enemies Defende Vsochrist 1594” and the basement vault is carved with the arms of the Gordons, Frasers, and Campbells. There are two upper stories served by a round stair turret at the NE corner. The series of square openings below the eaves of the roof of the stair turret may be crenels of a former open parapet although it is possible that at one time the whole building rose a story higher. Extending north from this turret is a long low two story 17th century wing with a projecting chimney breast on the east side.
