Auchintoul was originally a towerhouse built in the late 16th century though very little of the original building remains. General Alexander Gordon added a wing to it in 1712. He was the uncle of Alexander Gordon who founded the village of Aberchirder. The house was gutted and large areas of the building demolished after a fire in the 1980's but the bulk of what remained has been beautifully restored by the Gisselbaek family.

The older part of Auchintoul House dates from about the 16th century. The walls of this part are immensely thick and strong. The eastern wing of the house was built in 1711-12.

A plain rectangular mansion. No date-stones were seen on the building and little evidence of antiquity with the exception of the walls of the west wing which are probably of the 16th century. The whole building has the style of early 18th century.
