Built by the Gordons in 1564, it is now next to the Glenlivet distillery on the River Livet. Thought to have been built as a hunting seat of the Earls of Huntly, it's true purpose may have been to control the main access to Gordon country from across the Ladder Hills.
A castle here was originally owned by the Grants but the present structure is Gordon work. It is a ruinous late 16th century tower house in the L plan variety. Above the arched entrance doorway is a panel which bears the quartered arms of the Gordons , the date 1586 and the initials I.G and H.G. (John and Helen Gordon) . The Gordons defeated the Campbells nearby in 1594. The basement is vaulted. The Packhorse Bridge, a picturesque arch bridge, stands nearby and is thought to have been built in conjunction with Blairfindy.
