After the Reformation Westhall passed from the Bishops of Aberdeen to the Gordons, who built the oldest part of the present building. James Horn, Vicar of Elgin, bought the property in 1681 on his marriage to a daughter of the 7th Leslie Laird of Pitcaple. Westhall later passed by an heiress to the Dalrymple Elpinstones of nearby Lodgie Elphinstone and they then added Horn to their name. The small old part lies at the SW corner of the modern house, facing the approach. It has a three storey main block with a square wing engaging the SW corner and a conical roofed round tower on the SE corner. The square tower has an attic within an open parapet with roundels carried on label mouldings. Another label moulding supports a stair in a turret in the re-entrant angle betweent this tower and the south side of the main block.
Westhall was most recently a failed hotel, and the time of this writing is an abandoned property, that is currently for sale.
